Julie Jennings Quoted Regarding Possible New Intellectual Property Cabinet Position

Attorney Julie Jennings discusses a provision of the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act that would create a new cabinet position in the September 30, 2008 issue of CNET News. The new cabinet member would oversee efforts to reduce intellectual property infringement.

Ms. Jennings comments on the pros and cons of appointing an Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator and considers whether revising copyright laws could accomplish the same goals "without creating this entirely new cabinet position and all of the secondary positions that are going to fall underneath that." On the other hand, she agrees that "more needs to be done" to enforce intellectual property laws and decrease counterfeits in the marketplace.

The bill, S. 3325, is currently before President Bush for signature.
